In the mid '80s there was an ad hoc movement towards Do-It-Yourself demystification, there were artists doing things like building their own road worthy car, Technologies were being discovered and appropriated by artists who used them in ways not intended, like "slowscan TV" which was being used in art shows around the world. It's a technology that predates Television and the CRT. It was a device to send and receive images over the amateur HAM radio band. It was a time when Post Punk bands and art groups like the Situationists were creating truly original art through the hole that punk smashed in the wall between fan and band. These artists' experiments opened possibilities for creation and conduits for dissemination of their ideas. Static Image was born in this atmosphere. It was created with the realization that the obstructions that were in the way of putting out a book were gone. With a Macintosh SE20 running Pagemaker 2.0 at school, a high-end photocopier and a perfect binder at the copy shop where I worked I had all the elements for a press at my disposal.
